Whisk Manager vs Square
Square is a payments and point-of-sale platform for all kinds of businesses: card readers, a POS app, invoices, online ordering, staff tools and marketing. Whisk Manager is bakery management software for home, cottage and custom bakers: inquiries, quotes, recipes and costing, production planning and a client portal. The two overlap on invoices and online selling, but they are built for different jobs — and you can use both.
Quick verdict
- For taking card payments in person, at markets and at a counter, Square is the stronger choice — Whisk Manager has no POS app or card reader.
- For walk-in and retail selling with hardware, staff timecards and loyalty, Square is built for that.
- For bakery-specific operations — recipes, ingredient costing, batch planning and prep — Whisk Manager is the better fit.
- For custom cake orders that need an inquiry, a quote, a contract and design approval, Whisk Manager covers more of the workflow.
- If you already use Square, you don't have to leave it: on Whisk Studio Pro you can connect your Square account and take card payments through it.

Using Whisk Manager and Square together
You don't have to leave Square to use Whisk Manager. Whisk Manager is not a POS, so you can keep Square for in-person sales and use Whisk Manager for orders, recipes and production.
On Whisk Studio Pro, you can connect your Square account in Settings → Payments. Clients can then pay by card through Square for Whisk Manager invoices, deposits and balances in the Client Portal, and shop and presale orders. Whisk Manager checks each payment with Square before recording it on the order.
You can also choose to send invoices directly through Square. Square emails the invoice, and payments made on it are recorded in Whisk Manager.
Whisk Manager does not import your Square POS sales, inventory counts or Square orders and payments.
Switching from Square to Whisk Manager
Whisk Manager has no automatic Square migration.
Customers: export your customer directory from Square as a CSV (Square Dashboard → Customers → Import / Export → Export customers), then upload it to Whisk Manager with the Other CSV customer import. Upload any CSV with your customers in it. Whisk recognizes common column names automatically and lets you map the rest yourself.
Your Square orders and payments are not imported into Whisk Manager. Recipes and ingredients are set up in Whisk Manager, where recipes can be imported with AI.
Frequently asked questions
Is Whisk Manager a Square alternative?
Partly. Whisk Manager replaces the bakery-management side — inquiries, quotes, recipes, costing, production and the client portal — but it is not a point-of-sale system. You can use Square for in-person payments and Whisk Manager to run your orders.
Can I use Whisk Manager and Square together?
Yes. On Whisk Studio Pro you can connect your Square account so clients pay Whisk Manager invoices, deposits and shop orders by card through Square. Whisk Manager doesn't import your Square POS sales.
Which is better for a home bakery?
It depends on how you sell. Square suits home bakers who mostly sell ready-made items in person or through simple online ordering. Whisk Manager suits home and cottage bakers who take custom orders and want recipe costing, production planning and a client portal.
Does Square include recipe costing?
Square offers Square Recipes, a beta for Square for Restaurants Plus or Premium that tracks ingredient costs for prepared food items, with limits such as no recipes inside recipes and no recipes on items with size variations. Whisk Manager includes recipe costing on both of its plans.
Which is better for custom cake orders?
Whisk Manager. It handles the custom cake workflow from inquiry form and Cake Quote Builder to contract, design approval and payment in the Client Portal (Whisk Studio Pro). Square handles custom orders with item modifiers, notes and invoices.
Does Whisk Manager replace a POS system?
No. Whisk Manager has no POS app or card reader. If you take card payments in person, keep a POS such as Square alongside Whisk Manager.
Can I move my customer or order data from Square to Whisk Manager?
Your customers, yes: export the customer directory from Square as a CSV and upload it to Whisk Manager, mapping the columns yourself. Orders, payment history and inventory from Square are not imported.
