Worked example
Sample inputs to show the math, not suggested prices. Use your own costs and time.
- 24 cookies, Standard decorating at 8 minutes each
- One batch of dough costs $14.00 and makes 24 cookies
- Icing for the order: $9.00
- Packaging: $0.35 per cookie
- Hourly rate $25.00, target margin 20%
- Materials: $14.00 dough + $9.00 icing = $23.00.
- Labor: 24 × 8 min = 3.2 hrs × $25.00 = $80.00. That's your pay.
- Packaging: 24 × $0.35 = $8.40. Total cost: $111.40.
- Price: $111.40 ÷ (1 − 0.20) = $139.25, or $5.80 per cookie and $69.63 per dozen.
- Profit: $27.85, which is 20% of the price, on top of the $80.00 labor.
How the price is calculated
Everything is calculated exactly; amounts are rounded to the cent only on screen, so a line can differ from the total by a cent (the result says so when it does). Rounding the quote up or a minimum charge only ever raises the price, and the calculator shows the margin that quote really gives. When the minimum sets the quote, the price per cookie is the minimum divided by the cookies ordered.
- Cookies made = cookies ordered plus your breakage allowance, rounded up to whole cookies.
- Dough = the batch cost ÷ cookies per batch × cookies made (or whole batches, if you choose).
- Materials = dough + icing for the order + decorations per cookie × cookies made.
- Labor hours = setup and baking hours + icing prep hours + (decorating minutes × cookies made + packing minutes × cookies ordered) ÷ 60. Labor = labor hours × your hourly rate.
- Cost = materials + labor + packaging + overhead (a percentage of materials and labor, or a flat amount per order).
- Price = (cost + fixed payment fee) ÷ (1 − target margin − payment fee %).
Margin, markup and your pay
Margin is profit as a share of the price. Markup is profit as a share of your costs. A 20% margin is a 25% markup: on a $100 price, $20 is profit and $80 is cost, and $20 is 25% of $80.
Your labor is a cost, not profit. The calculator pays you your hourly rate for every minute you enter, then adds the margin on top, so the business still earns something after you're paid.
Card and payment fees come out of the price you charge, so the price is set to leave your margin after the fee.
Frequently asked questions
How do I price decorated sugar cookies?
Add up what one order really costs: the share of your dough batch the cookies use, icing, any decorations, packaging, overhead and your time at an hourly rate. Then set the price so your profit margin is left after payment fees. This calculator does each step and shows the price per cookie, per dozen and for the order.
How much should I charge per dozen decorated cookies?
It depends on your costs, how long your designs take and your local market, so there isn't one right number. Enter your own costs and decorating time and the calculator shows the per-dozen price that covers them and keeps your margin.
How do I account for decorating time?
Time a few cookies of each style and use the average minutes per cookie. The complexity presets only fill in sample minutes; change them to match your own timing. Setup, baking, icing prep and packing can be entered separately in Detailed Price.
What's the difference between profit margin and markup?
Margin is profit divided by the price; markup is profit divided by your costs. A 20% margin equals a 25% markup. The calculator targets a margin and shows the markup alongside it.
Should I charge for broken or test cookies?
Many bakers bake a few extra to cover breakage. In Detailed Price, a breakage allowance adds extra cookies made, and their dough, decorations and decorating time are included in the cost.
Do I need a minimum order?
That's your choice. If you set a minimum order charge in Detailed Price, small orders are quoted at the minimum and the calculator shows the margin that gives.
